Key Background

George Lucas broke new ground at San Diego Comic‑Con 2025 by making his first ever public appearance at the legendary convention, revealing the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The packed‑out panel included Lucas, museum director Guillermo del Toro, and Lucasfilm’s Doug Chiang, and was hosted by Queen Latifah. Lucas was given a standing ovation as he explained his dream for the museum.

His Lucas Museum, which he and wife Mellody Hobson established, will open in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park in 2026. With an 11-acre campus across 300,000 square feet, the museum will be built by celebrated architect Ma Yansong. With its forward-thinking design, the museum will consist of galleries, cinemas, a library, and interactive areas and will be dedicated to telling the history of storytelling from the perspective of visual art. Lucas underscored that the organization will be including all types of narrative art, such as comic books and movies.

Lucas has called the museum “a temple to the people’s art,” emphasizing that he is going to accord popular culture the respect it so rightly deserves. The collection serves as the backbone of the exhibitions, such reliable fare including Flash Gordon artwork, Peanuts cartoons, pages of 1968 Black Panthers’, and works of Norman Rockwell, Kara Walker, and Kadir Nelson. Lucas desires the museum to dissolve boundaries between popular culture and high art.

Guillermo del Toro has complimented the initiative, asserting that with the opportunity to save and pay respects to storytelling traditions left behind by mass-market museums, the initiative comes a little too late. Doug Chiang explained the inclusion of Lucasfilm’s most significant props, concept art, and costumes that will provide viewers with an intimate peek into the creative process of Star Wars and other iconic franchises. Despite initial mishaps, ranging from location relocations to a transition of authority, the project remains well on its way to its 2026 inauguration.
