Apple Introduces Liquid Glass Interface and On-Device AI at WWDC 2025

Prime Highlights

  • Apple debuts a breathtaking new “Liquid Glass” design, with fluid, see-through visuals across all platforms.
  • Rolls out on-device AI capabilities such as real-time translation, call screening, and visual search.

Key Facts

  • Apple changes OS version names by year: iOS 26, macOS 26 “Tahoe”, iPadOS 26.
  • The “Liquid Glass” interface is motivated by the Vision Pro experience with active motion and depth.
  • Apple Intelligence operates AI processes in private on devices, not needing the internet for translation or analysis.

Key Background

At its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, Apple unveiled a new visual redesign named “Liquid Glass” — the largest interface revamp since the introduction of flat design in iOS 7 back in 2013. The new look adds glassy UI elements and shimmering, translucent panels that react with flowing motion, giving the whole experience the sense of being more immersive and dynamic. The interface borrows a page from the Vision Pro headset’s spatial computing visuals, with an eye toward depth, brightness, and motion.

Aside from the visual updates, Apple renamed all of its operating systems after the year of release. Thus, iOS 19 is now iOS 26, macOS 15 becomes macOS 26 “Tahoe,” and so on for iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. This renaming is intended to make it easier to comprehend software versions on different devices.

On the technology side, Apple unveiled significant AI features under the banner of “Apple Intelligence.” These features are designed to execute completely on-device, ensuring user privacy along with providing robust abilities. For example, users can now translate phone conversations in real-time, search images by content via screenshots, and get intelligent suggestions based on what appears on their screens.

The Phone app is augmented with live call screening and a feature known as “Hold Assist” that holds on hold and notifies users when a live person comes back on. Messages adds support for custom chat backgrounds, polls, Apple Cash money transfers, and group typing indicators.

iPadOS 26 adds enhanced multitasking with resizable, draggable windows and a Mac-style menu bar, and macOS 26 “Tahoe” embraces the new design language and drops Intel-based Mac support. watchOS 26 includes gesture controls and a new voice-based “Workout Buddy” virtual trainer. The revamped Games app consolidates Apple Arcade and store titles, introducing leaderboards, social challenges, and a personalized library.

Maps now indicates places visited, CarPlay introduces widgets, and Siri is set to receive more AI enhancements later this year. Everything will be released in beta mode in the weeks ahead, with formal releases in fall 2025, possibly as part of the next iPhone launch.
